Pierce County Highway Commissioner Chad Johnson and Patrol Superintendent Al Thoner offer the following advice for safe winter driving and answer frequently asked winter driving questions.
A Durand man was hospitalized early Saturday morning after a plow truck struck his pickup in the town of Ellsworth. According to a Pierce County Sheriff's Office news release, a town of Ellsworth International plow truck, driven by 71-year-old Timothy Lorenz of Ellsworth, was working on clearing the Highway 10 and 610th Street intersection at 4:50 a.m. Jan. 19, when it struck a westbound 2014 F350 truck driven by 47-year-old David Schneider. Ellsworth Area Ambulance transported Schneider to River Falls Area Hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Santa Claus arrived in style Sunday, Dec. 2 when he rode into Ellsworth's Christmas in the Park event in a firetruck. It might have been turning into a winter wonderland outside the doors of the Ellsworth High School Cafetorium, but inside Thursday, Nov. 8, the audience was transported through music and impressive special effects to the Land of Oz and the Emerald City. Under the direction of Katie Fuchs, the EHS Drama Club performed "The Wizard of Oz" by Frank L. Baum, adapted by Frank Gabrielson, with music and lyrics from the MGM motion picture score by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg.
Incumbent Pierce County Sheriff Nancy Hove will almost certainly win a fourth term, as she ran unopposed aside from a late push by a write-in candidate. Hove, a Democrat, ran against write-in candidate Oake Gregory — who filed about a month before the election — and as of 10:50 p.m. Nov. 6 she had over 10,000 votes. Hove has been the Pierce County Sheriff for 12 years and has overseen the office’s push to upgrade its jail and office building in recent years. Gregory had 69 votes.
New RiverTown Multimedia reporter David Clarey started his first day with a bang—literally. The Carthage, S.D. (home of a straw bale museum, by the way) native was on his way to his first day of work when he was involved in a mild fender bender. But he didn't let that minor detail deter him from jumping into his new assignments with both feet. Clarey is a member of RT's government, public safety and features teams, primarily focusing on the Pierce County area, or wherever a good story takes him.
TOWN OF ISABELLE -- During Saturday’s Flood Run, one man was airlifted and another taken by ground ambulance to area hospitals after crashes in the town of Isabelle.
TOWN OF HARTLAND -- A Minnesota man ejected from a motorcycle was found by a homeowner and passerby on Saturday in the town of Hartland. Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the single-motorcycle crash at 4:21 p.m. on 620th Street near 290th Avenue.
