Every year since 2005, Minnesota State College Southeast has recognized outstanding graduates at its commencement ceremonies in Red Wing and Winona. Nominations are now open for the 2018 Outstanding Alumni Awards. Two awards are given each year, one for a Winona alumni and one for a Red Wing alumni. "The Outstanding Alumni Awards recognize our graduates for personal and professional success. We want to acknowledge their excellence," said Casie Johnson, associate foundation director of MSC Southeast. "We also want to honor their contributions to the community."
Two regional spelling bees were held Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Rochester, with 75 students participating. Students from 35 districts throughout southeastern Minnesota advanced to compete in the regional competitions coordinated by the Southeast Service Cooperative. Red Wing students Hannah Kosek, Skyler Stone, Alex Howard and Carson Jones competed in the regional spelling bee. Stone, a seventh-grader at Twin Bluff Middle School, advanced to the final.
Several Red Wing School Board members had a change of opinion at Tuesday's meeting on the prospect of a community survey as the district faces a second consecutive referendum election year. Don Lifto, a representative from Springsted Financial, the district's financial adviser, spoke to the board about the tangible outcomes the district could receive from a community survey.
Hot lava, a twisting jungle path full of obstacles, or even outer space — the two playgrounds at Sunnyside Elementary School can take a creative brain to just about anywhere. Recently, Sunnyside staff members have begun efforts toward expanding and enhancing the school's playgrounds. A surprise concert from a popular Twin Cities-based kids group Koo Koo Kangaroo on Jan. 24 kick-started a fundraising campaign to self-fund playground updates. Brianna Dressen, Pam Dressen, Tara Nelson, Jayne Boeding and Deb Heitman are leading the charge.

Little did Arlen Diercks know as he walked the halls of Red Wing Central High as a student in the 1960s-70s, that his Winger pride would be a key tool in trying to shape the future for Red Wing students. Diercks, who has served on the Red Wing School Board since 2015, was elected to serve as board chair for 2018 — his first term as chair. As the district faces a make-or-break referendum vote in November, Diercks said he feels ready to lead.
The Super Bowl is an event that needs no introduction. Millions around the world watch the game and all of its spectacle. Every one of US Bank Stadium's 70,000 seats held a loud and raucous voice. How do I know? Because, I was there. Huddled in the vast concrete loading dock area, I was one of over 400 field team members tasked with moving Justin Timberlake's staging into place for his halftime performance. Running onto the field with an oversized ramp, I felt the roar and rumble only a crowd that size can make.
Downtown Minneapolis will be buzzing with activities before US Bank Stadium houses football's biggest game Sunday, Feb. 4. With help from Welch Village, Polaris Industries will showcase the best of extreme winter sports at Polaris UpsideDowntown on Saturday, Feb. 3. The outdoor event will include snowmobile stunts, meet and greets with snow athletes, giveaways, and other outdoor fun. At 1:30 p.m., Levi Lavelle, a well-known pro rider, will perform his signature backflip jump over Nicollet Mall at 11th Street. Sticking the landing
Signature flavors of Chicago traditionally include the famous deep=dish pizza and loaded Chicago-style hot dog — boasting the perfect combination of crunch, acid and spice. For Chicago-raised Johnny Katakis, the Windy City's ideal cuisine swings a little more Mediterranean. "Every corner of the city, there's a little Greek shop," Katakis said. On Yelp.com, a simple search shows more than 300 results for Greek food in Chicago. A quick stop, grab n' go gyro counter is exactly what Katakis envisioned with the opening of Johnny's Gyros in Red Wing this month.
