Authorities said thieves apparently made off with a $10,000 piece of railroad equipment from a western Wisconsin train depot. According to the Pepin Police Department, a black-and-yellow track horse was stolen between Sept. 22 and Nov. 30 from the BNSF depot in Pepin. A news release states the piece of equipment is a walk-behind implement “used by the railroad to carry, remove and deploy rail spikes.”

ELLSWORTH — A plea deal appears to have been struck between Pierce County prosecutors and Rose Marie Kuehni, the Prescott woman charged in the 2015 shooting death of her boyfriend. Multiple sources on Monday confirmed that an agreement has been reached in the case. Kuehni's attorney, Mark Gherty, said he and his client were "working on the final bit" of a plea deal, though he did not discuss details. A Pierce County Clerk of Court employee said a plea agreement was reached, as did a relative of Douglas Bailey, the victim in the case.
The process of recounting every presidential ballot cast in Wisconsin begins this week, including Pierce and St. Croix counties. Wisconsin's election board on Friday approved the recount requested by Green Party candidate Jill Stein. She has said she wants to guarantee the integrity of the U.S. voting system since computer hacking had marked the Nov. 8 election. Democrat Hillary Clinton's campaign will take part in a Wisconsin recount of votes cast in the U.S. presidential race won by Republican Donald Trump, a campaign official said on Saturday.
Authorities confirmed Friday that the Beldenville teenager killed in an October crash on Highway 35 was wearing a seat belt. The news, passed along earlier in the week from St. Croix County Sheriff's Office investigators, came as a "huge relief," the victim's mother said Monday. "There was nothing more she could have done," Ione Hayes said. "It brought us a lot of peace." The revelation reverses the department's earlier statement that Kyra Hayes, 16, was not buckled up during the Oct. 21 crash north of River Falls in the town of Troy.
ELLSWORTH — A judge lifted bond conditions last week for a Prescott woman who awaits her second trial on homicide allegations. Buffalo-Pepin County Circuit Court Judge James Duvall said 45-year-old Rose Marie Kuehni is not likely to skip out on bail and does not represent a threat to the public in removing the restrictions. Kuehni is now free of electronic home monitoring and provisions that restricted her travel to a 10-mile radius of the Pepin home where she's been living.
ELLSWORTH — The Pierce County District Attorney's Office is moving ahead to retry a Prescott woman acquitted of first-degree homicide, but a judge signaled specific boundaries he said prosecutors may need to abide while trying Rose Marie Kuehni on a lesser homicide charge. The framework Buffalo-Pepin County Circuit Court Judge James Duvall outlined echoes instructions he gave a jury in August that preceded a mixed-bag verdict for the woman accused of murdering her boyfriend, Douglas Bailey, Nov. 22, 2015, at their home.

Gilbertson and his passenger, 30-year-old Danielle R. Gilbertson, injured after the motorcycle they were on crashed on County Road UU and 100th Avenue in the town of Maiden Rock.
