Joel Lopez-Larios and his family own a limousine business in the Cities, but after experiencing "tacos" in Red Wing, Larios couldn't help but offer something more. Dissatisfied with the fastfood option, he took matters into his own hands. It took three months for him to get his truck up and running. One month after opening, Larios and his daughter, Montserrat, are eager to welcome new customers.
As the Aug. 14 primary election nears, the League of Women's Voters offered Red Wing residents an opportunity to get to know their candidates before casting votes. On July 26, at the Red Wing Public Library citizens heard from 13 of the 14 candidates for City Council. Only candidate Tony Wiech was not in attendance. In addition to the volunteers from the LWV and the Chamber of Commerce, there were an estimated 60 community members present.
City of Red Wing, concerned about invasive species infestation, is putting together an emerald ash borer awareness campaign. By partnering with Rainbow Treecare, the city will be drawing attention to the issue by wrapping about 200 ash trees in green plastic wrap. "Other cities who have fallen victim to EAB have found this to be a successful way to gain attention," Tina Folch of the Red Wing Public Works Department said.
With immense gratitude for its veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces, the city of Red Wing has proclaimed itself a "Purple Heart City." On Monday, June 25, Mayor Sean Dowse read a proclamation to City Council stating that, through its admiration and gratitude, Red Wing is hereto forward a Purple Heart City, and the week of June 25, 2018, is "officially designated as the week in Red Wing to remember and recognize veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart Medal."
