WASHINGTON—U.S. Supreme Court justices reject former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura's attempt to restore a $1.8 million award an appeals court gave him. Without comment, justices said on Monday, Jan. 9, they would not change a federal appeals court decision that erased a lower court ruling that Ventura is due the money after being defamed by author Chris Kyle in "American Sniper." Ventura had celebrated his lower court victory by a 2014 jury, but now has two straight defeats. His case still could be heard in a new federal trial in Minnesota.
ST. PAUL — A farmer from Renville County has been named the interim president of the Minnesota Farmers Union. Gary Wertish, who has served as vice-president to the MFU for the last five years, assumed the leadership position this week following the retirement Dec. 31 of Doug Peterson. Peterson, had been president of the farm advocacy organization for the past 14 years. "MFU is focused right now on the beginning of the Minnesota Legislative session and working with the new administration in Washington D.C. and our members of Congress" said Wertish.
MINNEAPOLIS—The University of Minnesota fired its head football coach on Tuesday, Jan. 3, multiple outlets are reporting in the Twin Cities. Tracy Claeys, who came under fire during a recent team boycott before a bowl game, was scheduled to meet with athletic director Mark Coyle on Tuesday. The Gophers beat Washington State a week ago in the Holiday Bowl.

ST. PAUL—Wayne Farms, an Oakwood, Ga. establishment, is recalling approximately 4,059 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken products due to undercooking, resulting in the potential survival of bacterial pathogens in the products, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced. These items were shipped to retail stores in Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and North Dakota. The ready-to-eat grilled chicken breast items were produced on Aug. 1 and Aug. 29. The following products are subject to recall:
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — Heavy snow is expected to fall throughout Minnesota on Friday, Nov. 18, making travel difficult in a central and northern Minnesota. The National Weather Service expects 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour to fall in Fergus Falls, New York Mills, Wadena, Park Rapids and Bemidji this morning. In additional, travel will be difficult due to winds gusting over 40 mph at times. The weather service predicts less than an inch of snow is likely in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
WASHINGTON — More discussion is needed with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will grant an easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline, the agency announced Monday, Nov. 14, in a temporary win for protesters of the four-state pipeline. The Army Corps invited the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to engage in discussions regarding conditions that could be placed on an easement that would reduce the risk of a spill, increase detection and response to a possible spill and enhance the protection of Lake Oahe and the tribe's water supplies.
ELLENDALE, Minn.—A train derailment has forced the evacuation of Ellendale early Friday morning, Nov. 11., as well as the closure of Highway 30 near the city, located just south of Owatonna. KAAL-TV reports the train was carrying propane. Officials are working to clean up the area and the city was being evacuated as a precaution, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said in a news release. Traffic that must use Highway 30 west of Interstate 35 should use Exit 32 at Hope and follow Steele County Road 14, the DOT said.
LITTLE FALLS, Minn.—A 41-year-old man was found Monday, Nov. 7, deceased in the woods after suffering an apparent gunshot wound in central Minnesota. Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reported deputies were called at 5:04 p.m. to a possible hunting accident on property near the intersection of Hawthorne Road and Jewel Road in Belle Prairie Township east of Little Falls. According to the sheriff's office, Terrence Brisk was found deceased by a family member. Brisk was believed to be hunting as he was wearing blaze orange.
ST. PAUL—Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and legislative leaders are discussing how they can deal with soaring health insurance premiums. Dayton spokesman Sam Fettig said the governor plans to meet Tuesday morning, Nov. 1, with House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown. The governor's met with Senate Minority Leader David Hann, R-Eden Prairie, on Monday and he has spoken to Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, D-Cook, and House Minority leader Paul Thissen, D-Minneapolis..
