Area Wrestling: Zumbrota-Mazeppa picks up big wins in triangular
The Zumbrota-Mazeppa wrestling team came away with two wins, beating Goodhue 34-30 and Byron 45-26 in the Zumbrota-Triangular on Thursday.
Z-M won the first four matches in its dual with Goodhue. The Wildcats came back to win the next three. Tyler Soltau, 152 pounds, won by pin for the Cougars, but Baxter O'Reilly (160) started another string on match wins for Goodhue with a 6-2 decision over Ethan Kovars. Jacob Bennett won at 220 pounds to put the Cougars up 34-27 going into the final match.
The Cougars gained the lead against Byron thanks to three wins by pin in a four match span. Cole Poncelet, Soltau and Kovers each won by pin for the Cougars. Also winning by pin for the Cougars were Lucas Shiell (106) and Trey Lexvold (285).
Goodhue beat Byron in its other dual, 46-29.
Lake City wins big in triangular
Lake City came away with two wins, 49-12 over Triton and 51-15 over Saint Clair-Mankato Loyola, in the Triton Triangular on Thursday.
Against Triton, Lake City won the first five matches, lost the the next two, then won the next six matches. In its dual against SCML, the Tigers got two wins by pin from Thomas Frank (182) and Max Below (195).
Cannon Falls overtakes Stewartville
Cannon Falls came out on top, 48-29, in its dual against Stewartville on Thursday.
The Bombers jumped ahead with wins by pin from Colten Black (106), Preston Carlisle (113) and Erwin Strelow (120).
Ty Schmidt came back with a win by pin for Stewartville. Cannon Falls bounced back to win the next four of five matches, which included a win by pin from Riley Keenan (170). The dual ended with Stewartville winning by forfeit in three of the final four matches.
Kenyon-Wanamingo fell behind early but came back to win convincingly, 60-12, over Pine Island on Tuesday.
Pine Island's Luke Williams (106) and Micah Douglas (113) grabbed two wins to start the dual. Starting with a forfeit win for the Knights at 120 pounds, Kenyon-Wanamingo won the next four matches. Isaiah Thompson (126) and Alec Johnson (132) each won by pin in that stretch.
Dawson Fallon (145) won by a major decision for Pine Island, then Kenyon-Wanamingo took the final seven matches with Nathan Bauer (152) and Seth Brossard (160) each winning by pin.
