Wrestling: 20 individuals qualify for state

After two days of wrestling, five area teams qualified a total of 20 wrestlers to the individual state tournament.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa led the way with eight wrestlers headed to the Xcel Energy Center on Friday for the opening rounds of the individual tournament. The Cougars compete in the team tournament on Thursday.

Hayden Voxland (170 pounds), Caden Steffen (182), Jacob Bennett (195) and Jarret Haglund (220) all came away as Section 1A champions for Z-M, while the runners-up include Michael Majerus (106), Beau Jurrens (113), Mike Vath (126) and Luke Tupper (145).

Kenyon-Wanamingo has five wrestlers going to state, in addition to the team. Jeron Matson (113), Seth Brossard (145) and Logan Quam (182) all won gold at the Section 2A tournament. Bray Olson (120) and Alec Johnson (126) came in second for the Knights.

Goodhue's four state-bound wrestlers include Section 1A champion Mason Huemann (152), and runners-up Kelby O'Reilly (160), Kaleb O'Reilly (170) and Ryan Schoenfelder (220).

Section 1AA was dominated by the two best teams in Class AA in No. 1 Kasson-Mantorville and No. 2 Simley. The two combined to send 19 wrestlers to state out of a possible 28 spots.

Cannon Falls and Lake City snatched up three of the remaining nine slots, including Bombers Hayden Strain, a section champion at 170, and runner-up Cooper Peterson (113). The Tigers will be represented by section champion Tanner Frank (126).

Wrestling begins Friday at 9 a.m., and the tournament concludes Saturday evening with the finals.
