Wrestling: Goodhue, Z-M advance to section semifinals

Goodhue beat Dover-Eyota, 57-12, in the Section 1A quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Wildcats and Eagles went back and forth in the early matches until Mariano Bigalk won by fall increasing Goodhue's lead 18-6. The Wildcats found their footing from there, only losing one match the rest of the way.

Maddox O`Reilly, Bigalk, Joel Breuer, Mason Huemann, Kelby O`Reilly and Kodee O`Reilly all won by pin.

Goodhue will take on Chatfield in the semifinals on Saturday at Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.

Z-M 70, Wabasha-Kellogg 9

Zumbrota-Mazeppa wasted little time getting out to an early lead on Wabasha-Kellogg before completing the victory, 70-9, in the Section 1A quarterfinals on Thursday.

Michael Majerus, Beau Jurrens, John Poulin, Luke Tupper, Sam Nordquist, Hayden Stensland, Jacob Bennett and Jarret Haglund all won by pin.

Z-M will face Caledonia-Houston in the semifinals on Saturday at Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.

Three area teams bounced

Cannon Falls and Pine Island both won first-round duals on Thursday, but were swiftly eliminated from the Section 1AA team tournament in the quarterfinal round.

The Bombers, the No. 9 seed, beat eighth-seeded St. Thomas Academy, 55-21, but were then blanked 73-0 by top-seeded and top-ranked Kasson-Mantorville.

The seventh-seeded Panthers edged 10th-seeded La Crescent 42-37, but second-seeded and second-ranked Simley ended Pine Island's run, 79-0.

Lake City, the fifth seed, had just one match on Thursday, falling 44-12 at Stewartville.

The individual section tournaments begin Friday, Feb. 23, at Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.
