Wrestling: Goodhue ties up Lake City
Nine-straight wins lifted Goodhue to a 52-13, Hiawatha Valley League victory over Lake City on Thursday.
The Tigers were the team to get out to a hot start with a pin from Mason West and a major decision from Nash Nelson to open the dual. But Wildcat Maddox O'Reilly got a fall at 120 pounds to get Goodhue its first points.
Tanner Frank earned a decision at 132, and that was all the points the Tigers could muster the rest of the way. Wildcats Mason Huemann, Kelby O'Reilly and Ryan Schoenfelder all recorded wins by fall over the final 10 bouts.
On Saturday, Goodhue will be tested at the Rogers Invitational, while Lake City is off until Thursday when the Tigers will head to Lanesboro for a triangular with Fillmore Central and La Crescent.
Z-M 69, Byron 12
Byron got pins in two of the first three matches, but Zumbrota-Mazeppa took down the last 11 Bears for a 69-12 victory on Thursday.
Beau Jurrens got the Cougars three points with a decision at 113 pounds, but Z-M trailed 12-3 in the Hiawatha Valley Leage dual. Then Mike Vath got a pin at 126, and Connor Heitman followed with the same at 132 and the Cougars took the at 15-12. Spencer DeFrang, Sam Nordquist, Hayden Voxland, Caden Steffen, Jacob Bennett, Jarret Haglund and Luke Dahlen also won by fall for Z-M.
Saturday will see the Cougars, ranked No. 1 in Class A, host an invitational that includes Caledonia, Lewiston-Altura, Worthington and Owatonna, the No. 9 team in Class AAA.
Stewartville 42, Pine Island 30
Pine Island was up by 12, but two pins and two forfeits chased any chance the Panthers had in a 42-30 defeat to Stewartville in a Hiawatha Valley League dual on Thursday.
Luke Williams and Ty Smidt picked up two falls early for Pine Island, and Dawson Falls on Evan Goplen went back-to-back on pins as well. Broghan Kunz and Cade Predmore each won by decision to give the Panthers a 30-18 lead before the Tigers picked up 24 points over the final four matches.
On Saturday, Pine Island will compete in the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Invitational along with Kenyon-Wanamingo, Medford and Maple River.
K-M 81, Cannon Falls 0
Kasson-Mantorville picked up five pins, six forfeits and three technical falls in an 81-0, Hiawatha Valley League victory over Cannon Falls on Thursday.
The Bombers will try to put the lopsided loss behind them on Saturday at the Westfield Invitational at Blooming Prairie High School.
