Volleyball: Wingers fall in five sets

Traveling to Mankato East on Tuesday, the Red Wing volleyball team met with its first conference opponent but fell in five sets, 3-2.

Red Wing started the match off strong, winning the first set 25-11, but dropped the second set 25-16 and lost Elle Thorson to injury. The Wingers recovered to win the third set, 25-15, but couldn't complete the task and lost the last two sets 25-16 and 15-13.

"We had a tough time overcoming an injury early in the second set, and Mankato East played great defense," Red Wing head volleyball coach Lindsay Woychek said. "Meg Grove had a great game in relief of Elle Thorson who left the match due to injury."

Abi Deming led Red Wing in kills with 11 and blocks with three. Eva Hutter also added nine kills.

Dani Deming had 21 digs, while Macy Koester was the team leader in assists with 23.

Red Wing, 1-1 (0-1 Big Nine Conference), has an extended break with its next scheduled game coming on Thursday, Sept. 6, when it hosts Rochester Mayo.
