Area Volleyball: Pine Island opens season with win

Pine Island got all it could handle when Waseca visited on Thursday for both teams' season opener.

After winning the first set, 25-15, the Panthers dropped the second, 25-23. Pine Island won the next two sets to earn the win, 3-1, but each was down to the wire. In the pivotal third set, Pine Island squeaked by with a 27-25 win and then won the fourth, 25-20.

Regan Bushman led Pine Island with 10 kills, while Megan Quintero and Avri Kundert each had seven. Sydney Andrist set up the offense with 34 assists and Rachel Ryan had three aces.

Leading the defense were Bushman and Jordyn Mathison with three blocks apiece.

Next up for Pine Island is a trip to Chatfield on Tuesday.

Z-M 3, St. Charles 0

Zumbrota-Mazeppa opened its season with a trip to St. Charles but came back with its first victory.

The Cougars faced few tense moments with a three-set victory (25-12, 25-19, 25-9).

Leading Z-M was Aspen Brubaker with nine kills, 13 digs and three aces. Carly Frederixon had eight kills, Makayla Arendt recorded seven kills and five blocks, Juliah Jackson and Jakalyn Arendt each had six kills, and Megan Johnson had 18 assists.

Z-M travels to St. Croix Lutheran for its next match on Tuesday.
