Track and Field: Red Wing relay sets school record at Big 9 championships
The Red Wing boys' and girls' track and field teams finished eighth and fourth, respectively, in the Big 9 Conference Championships on Thursday.
Highlighting the girls' fourth-place finish was the 400-meter relay team of Elle Thorson, Cadence Thorson, Carolyn Hanson and Tyler McGrath. The four Wingers won the 4x100 relay with a time of 49.89 seconds—a new school record. The old record was 50.64 set in 1987 by Nancy Doyle, Stacy Bjornson, Leslie Todd and Meri Schwartz.
Other first-place winners include: Grace Johnson in the 3,200 (11:15.58) and the 4x200 relay team of Breck Bergin, Elle Scott, Emily Hart and Tyler McGrath (1:46.79).
The Wingers had several other top-five finishers. Johnson came in fourth in the 1,600, setting a new personal best of 5:09.27. The 4x800 relay team of Cecelia De Jong, Sammi Chandler, Sophia Carlson and Ariana Mollgaard finished in fifth with a time of 10:01.73. Abi Deming came in third in the shot put (35 feet, 9 inches) and the discus throw (107-04, a personal best). Cadence Thorson finished second in the long jump with a 17-01.
On the boys' side, Gage Senty won discus with a personal-best throw of 150-07. Tucker Wallin came in third place in the 800 and 1,600. Wallin finished the 800 in 2:02.50, a new personal best, and the 1,600 in 4:26.05. Tom Nemanich finished in fifth place in the 3,200 with a time of 10:18.97. Kaleb DeWall finished in fifth place in the shot put with a new personal record of 47-11.25.
The boys also had two relays finish in the top-five. Abe De Jong, Carson Nystuen, Kristian Draper and Noah Morgan came in fifth in the 4x200 relay (1:36.48) and Bryan Zucker, Jonah Leise, Dylan Anderson and Weston Wyatt came in fifth in the 4x800 relay (8:33.46).
Up next for the Wingers is the Section 1AA meet Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, at Lakeville South High School. Competition begins at 1 p.m. Friday with Saturday's finals starting at 10 a.m.
