Boys' Swimming: Meacham back in fly finals

There was no surprise in the 100-yard butterfly at the Class A swimming and diving meet at the University of Minnesota on Friday as Red Wing's William Meacham took first place with a time of 50.29 seconds.

Meacham had a seed time of 50.82 seconds, and had a nearly two-second gap between himself and second place. That margin narrowed a bit on Friday, but runner-up Thayer Breazeale of Breck/Blake is still 1.11 seconds behind at 51.40.

The 200 medley relay team of Ian Johnson, Nick Bayley, Meacham and Jayden Jech narrowly missed the finals, completing the swim in 1:40.92 for ninth place. Sartell-St. Stephen took eighth with a 1:40.63. Meacham also swam in the 200 individual medley, placing 23rd with a time of 2:13.51.

Jech's time of 5:05.46 in the 500 freestyle placed him 15th in a race that saw half of the 22 entrants swim slower than seed time.

In the 100 backstroke, Johnson took 14th in 56.78. Red Wing alum Hunter Connelly's 2016 Class A record of 48.87 still stands as Breazeale's top time was 50.11.

The Class A state meet concludes Saturday with finals set to begin at 11 a.m.
