Boys' Swimming: Wingers qualify five for state
Five Red Wing swimmers are headed to state after a strong performance Friday at the Section 1A swimming and diving meet at the Rochester Aquatic Center.
The Wingers finished the meet sixth overall, but started the day with a bang in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Ian Johnson, Nick Bayley, William Meacham and Jayden Jech took first place with a time of 1 minute, 40.60 seconds, qualifying them for the state meet.
“The boys brought it all to that relay as they dropped two seconds from their prelim swim.” said head coach Mikayla Beuch. “We had to put a lot of energy this year towards that relay and it paid off, while setting the tone for the rest of the meet.”
Meacham also qualified for state in the 200 individual medley with a fifth-place time of 2:04.98 and the 100 butterfly with a first-place time of 50.82.
Jech earned a state bid in the 500 freestyle with a fourth-place time of 5:01.56 and Johnson rounded out the Wingers’ state qualifiers with a third-place time of 56.86 in the 100 backstroke.
Other notable finishes from the section meet include: 50-yard freestyle: Jech placed 10th (22.87); 1 meter diving: Abe De Jong placed eighth with 264.05; 100-yard butterfly: De Jong and Bayley went back-to-back in seventh and eighth with times of 55.74 and 57.65, respectively; and 200-yard freestyle relay: Bayley, De Jong, Meacham and Jech took sixth place (1:32.99).
The state swim meet starts with preliminaries on Thursday and Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Finals begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
