Boys Swimming: Red Wing ends 2017 with dual win
Illness, injuries, holiday break. It all wasn't enough to slow down the Red Wing boys' swimming and diving team on Thursday.
Even with seven swimmers gone for various reasons, the Wingers were able to tally a 96-85 non-conference dual victory against Tartan at Twin Bluff Middle School.
"We had a great meet this week during the holiday season," said Red Wing head coach Mikayla Beuch. "We hadn't competed against the Tartan boys team before so it was an opportunity for us to see some new faces and defend our home pool."
Willie Meacham came up with two individual victories in both the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 14.31 seconds) and 100 butterfly (54.72). Also claiming two victories was Nick Nordenskjold, who was the top sprinter in the 50 (25.48) and 100 freestyle (58.59). Also getting wins in swimming events were Jayden Jech (500 freestyle; 5:37.24) and Ian Johnson (100 backstroke; 1:01.44).
Abe De Jong pulled double duty in the pool. Along with winning at diving (171.05 points), he was part of the 200 freestyle relay, with Meacham, Jech and Nordenskjold, that took first place (1:37.92).
"He has come a long way this season balancing between both swimming and diving," Beuch said of De Jong.
The Wingers got another relay win in the 200 medley, thanks to Johnson, Nick Bayley, Meacham and Jech (1:49.21). Jech (200 freestyle; 2:05.39) and Bayley (100 breaststroke; 1:14.37) also claimed second-place finishes.
On Thursday, Jan. 4, Red Wing is back home for a Big Nine Conference dual with Winona.
