Softball: Red Wing rebounds with win over Albert Lea
The Red Wing softball rebounded from its loss to Northfield the prior day with a 6-3 Section 1AAA win over Albert Lea on Friday.
The Tigers scored first, grabbing a 2-0 lead. The Wingers answered with a three-run fourth inning. Hailey Ehlers capped the inning with a two-run home run.
Holding a 3-2 lead, Winger Justine Swenning held the Tigers in check the rest of the game. Swenning ended her complete-game victory with 12 strikeouts.
Winger Haddie Furlong had a double and Abby Boxrud went 2-for-4.
Red Wing next faces Kasson-Mantorville on Tuesday at Todd Park in Austin at 4 p.m.
Having defeated Austin three times previously this season, the Red Wing softball team did so again in the opening round of the Section 1AAA tournament on Thursday. The Wingers came from behind to win 7-6.
In the first inning the Wingers grabbed an early 3-0 lead, but watched it evaporate in the second. The Packers scored five runs in the second to take the lead.
Back came the Wingers in the fourth. Meg Grove, who finished 3-for-4 at the plate, drove in two runs on a two-out double to tie the game. In the fifth, the Wingers regained the lead. Hailey Ehlers dropped in a single that scored two and gave the Wingers a 7-5 lead.
The Wingers held off a late rally by Austin in the seventh en route to the win.
Having won its first round game, the Wingers next played the top seeded Northfield. The Raiders scored one run in the second inning, five in the third and nine in the fourth to win 15-0 in four innings over the Wingers.
Red Wing next plays Albert Lea Friday at 4 p.m. on Todd Park in Austin.
