Girls Soccer: Wingers take Northfield into final minutes

The Red Wing girls' soccer team continues to play its opponents hard, but has yet to translate that success into a win as it dropped another contest on Thursday, 2-0, against Northfield.

The Wingers and Raiders were knotted up at 0-0 with eight minutes remaining in the second half when Northfield scored its first goal. Red Wing surrendered another goal later in the half when it attempted to send extra players forward to try and tie the game.

Red Wing's keeper, Ashlyn Nystuen, made 10 saves.

Although the Wingers couldn't score a goal, the defense held up against last year's Big Nine champion.

"The fact that we played them for the entire game is a testament to the work of Ashlyn (Nystuen) and our back three (Mia Gronseth, Lily Befort and Sydney Rahn) for enduring stretches of high pressure," Red Wing girls' soccer head coach Taylor Becker said. "We are learning quickly where we are at compared to where we'd like to be and have been improving each day."

Red Wing (0-3-1) will have a chance to get its first win of the season on Saturday when it hosts Rochester Lourdes at 4 p.m.
