Boys' Hockey: Red Wing falls to Albert Lea and St. Paul Academy
The Red Wing boys’ hockey team lost 4-1 to Albert Lea on Monday.
Blake Ulve got the Tigers on the board with the first goal of the game at 2 minutes, 5 seconds of the first period. Winger Cam Blue buried a power-play goal at 3:20 to tie the game at 1-1. Cole Wentzel gave the Tigers the lead again with a goal at 5:06 of the first.
The Tigers added a goal in the second and third en route to victory.
Wingers goaltender Calyn Blue stopped 43 of 47 shots on net.
Red Wing fell to 6-17 overall and 4-8 in the Big Nine.
Tuesday’s home game against John Marshall was cancelled, leaving the Wingers with a road game at Northfield on Thursday to close the regular season. The Section 4A tournament begins Tuesday, Feb. 19, with first-round play between the fifth-through-12th seeds at either Roseville Arena or Aldrich Arena. The top four seeds receive a first-round bye.
St. Paul Academy scored three goals in the third period to complete the 5-3 comeback victory over Red Wing in boys' hockey action on Saturday.
The Wingers scored three goals in the first period. Winger Taite Luhman got the scoring started with at 5 minutes, 3 seconds of the first. Luhman later assisted Josh Rikli's goal at 10:27 of the first period. The Spartans answered with a goal at 11:04 and less than a minute later Michael Stoffel scored to give the Wingers a 3-1 lead.
Spartan Michael Bagnoli scored the lone goal in the second period at 14:07.
Nolan Gifford scored two of the Spartan's three third-period goals. Gifford buried the tying goal at 2:11 and an esurance goal on the power play at 8:03 of the third.
Aidan Coyle made 42 saves in net for the Wingers.
Red Wing dropped to 6-16 overall.
