Girls Hockey: Wingers win two

Red Wing scored four goals in the first period on Thursday, then cruised to a 5-1 victory over Rochester John Marshall.

Maria Haley opened the scoring, followed by two Taylor Heise goals and one from Elle Bryant as the Wingers led 4-0 after one.

Ashley Koehler scored on a third-period power play for the Rockets early in the third, with Heise completing the hat trick with just more than a minute to play in the game.

Tyler McGrath made 20 saves in the win, while Anysia Heimer stopped 30 of 35 Red Wing shots.

Fifth-ranked South St. Paul took a 2-1 lead late in the second period, but Taylor Heise tied the game in the third, then won it in overtime for fourth-ranked Red Wing in Wednesday's Class A showdown.

Heise's goal 4 minutes, 18 seconds into the game was the only one of the first period. Kate Klaustermeier and Mackenna Emery made it 2-1 Packers in the second.

Heise's second goal came at 2:43 of the third on an assist from Solveig Roth. The extra-time game-winner came at 7:18, also on a Roth assist.

Red Wing (18-4) plays two of its final three games on the road, beginning with Saturday's trip to Mankato West. On Tuesday, the Wingers head to Albert Lea before finishing up the regular season at home on Thursday against Mankato East.
