Girls Hockey: Heise helps Team USA reach gold-medal game

Red Wing senior girls’ hockey player and Lake City native Taylor Heise will be playing for a gold medal on Saturday after Team USA beat Canada after a shootout, 4-3, the U18 Women’s World Championship semifinals Friday morning in Dmitrov, Russia.

Heise, the team captain, scored the game’s first goal at the 8-minute, 33-second mark of the first period. Heise was credited with the goal after a shot by Gracie Ostertag deflected off Heise’s skate into the net.

With the game tied at 3-3 following three periods and a 10-minute, four-on-four overtime, shootout goals by Britta Curl and Makenna Webster sent Team USA into the championship game. Heise was the first Team USA player with an attempt in the shootout, but missed.

Team USA will be making its 11th consecutive berth in the goal-medal game.

Through four tournament games, Heise has tallied four goals and an assist while helping Team USA to a 4-0 record.

Heise and the rest of Team USA will take on Sweden in the U18 goal-medal game at 10:30 a.m. The game will be streamed live at
