Gymnastics: Red Wing finishes in fifth at Big Nine meet
The Red Wing gymnastics team came in fifth place with a team score of 131.6 at the Big Nine Conference Meet on Saturday.
The Wingers finished less than a point behind fourth-place Winona.
"We met our goal of finishing in the upper half and are very excited to have done that," said Red Wing head coach Lisa Hanson.
Breck Bergin placed 10th on vault with a score of 9.225. Bergin also had a personal best score of 8.475 on bars, took sixth in floor (9.05) and 10th in the all-around (34.6). Sylvia Marty recorded a personal best score, finishing in 11th on beam with a 8.075. Carolyn Hanson tied for seventh with a 9.025 on floor.
"Sylvia Marty really stepped up on beam and lead the team with her beautiful routine," Hanson said, "and Chloe Fox had to step in prior to competition and replace Hanson on beam due to a hip flexor injury and was able to stay composed. It's hard to compete only one event, or replace someone, in a long meet when you are used to competing all four. It takes another level of mental toughness that the gymnast has to deal with themselves."
Bergin was named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Red Wing next competes in the Section 1A meet on Saturday. The meet will be held at Red Wing and is scheduled to begin at noon.
