Gymnastics: Two Wingers, PIZM team heading to state
Red Wing placed fifth at the Section 1A gymnastics meet on Saturday at Rochester John Marshall High School, but the Wingers' day was more successful than it looks at first glance. With a 130.775, Red Wing achieved a season-long goal to reach 130 and, in the process, qualified two gymnasts for the state meet. Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa won the meet with a 144.825.
"We had so many personal-best scores, and the full-team effort to reach our goal of 130," said Winger head coach Lisa Hanson. "We just went into the day with a positive attitude and a desire to do well and have fun. We knew with the change in qualifying, we had a chance of having girls make state, but to have it happen is really exciting."
On vault, Breck Bergin put down a fifth-place score of 9.275, which qualified her for state in the event. Carolyn Hanson will head north to compete in the balance beam competition at state after a fourth-place score of 9.05 on Saturday. Both sophomores, Bergin and Hanson will compete on Saturday at the University of Minnesota. The Class A individual meet begins at 11 a.m.
PIZM team, three individuals heading to state
Ranked sixth in Class A, and the only Section 1A team in the top-15, Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa was the favorite on Saturday at the Section 1A meet at Rochester John Marshall High School. PIZM lived up to the billing, taking first place with a 144.825. Austin, ranked 18th, took second with a 140.775. It's the first team appearance at state for PIZM since 2011.
PIZM's Jaci Newman took the top spot on the balance beam with a 9.35. Newman also won the floor exercise with a 9.625, holding off teammate Sawyer Gorman (9.55). Newman (37.125) and Gorman (36.625) went two-three in the all-around competition behind Austin's Jennifer Boyle (37.875).
In addition to the team, PIZM will send several athletes to the individual state meet including Gorman, Newman and Brynn Olson on vault, bars and floor, and Newman and Gorman on beam and all-around.
The team meet begins Friday at 11 a.m. at the University of Minnesota. The individual competition is 11 a.m. Saturday, also at the University of Minnesota.
