Boys' Golf: Red Wing dominates section tournament
Behind top-golfer Cecil Belisle the Red Wing boys' golf team cruised to a 31-stroke win over second-place Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa, winning 635-666 in the Section 1AA tournament.
Belisle finished in first as an individual and set a new section two-day record with a 5-under 139. Red Wing head coach Nate Gale said Belisle was happy to win, but is enjoying having the team join him at state.
"Some of the younger guys improved," Gale said. "William (Ahrens) shot an 80, which is 10 shots better than his average. Mac (DeSutter) improved on his Day 1 score of 87 to an 82 on the second day. Just all-around improvement helped us win."
Ahrens, Desutter, Denval Atkinson and Cole Krie all had better Day 2 scores. The four golfers combined to shoot 21 fewer strokes from the first day to the second.
Red Wing will travel to Jordan to compete at the Class AA State tournament on June 11 and 12 at Ridges at Sand Creek.
