Girls' Golf: Herzog, Yoemans lead Red Wing to state
Down by five strokes with nine holes to go, the Red Wing girls' golf team played a record-breaking back nine to win the Section 1AA tournament by 20 and advance to the state tournament.
The Wingers led Lake City 325-328 after the first day, but were behind after the first nine holes on the second day.
"Lake City is by the best team we've had to go through," said Red Wing head coach Mark Herzog. "We feel very fortunate to get through them. The girls played tremendous and showed a lot of heart with clutch shots on the back nine."
Winger Leah Herzog shot a section record 4-under 68 to lead all individuals. Sophia Yoemans shot a 33 on the back nine to finish with a 70.
Mark Herzog said Sydney Flack had her best day of the season as she shot a 37 on the back nine after shooting a 47 on the front nine.
The spirited play propelled the Wingers to a 635-655 victory over the second-place Tigers.
Ashten Chandler also came in clutch for the Wingers, shooting an 88 on the second day. Leah Herzog won the section with a two-day total of 4-under 140 while Yoemans finished a stroke behind with a 3-under 141.
The Class AA state tournament begins Tuesday, June 11, and concludes Wednesday, June 12. Both rounds are at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.
