Boys Golf: Wingers, Tigers advance after strong Day 1

The Red Wing boys' golf team edged out Lake City by five strokes to take command during Day 1 of the Section 1AA tournament on Wednesday at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester.

The Wingers had a team score of 299 while the Tigers finished at 304. Stewartville and Lourdes rounded out the teams that advanced to Day 2 with team scores of 325 and 332, respectively.

Leading the way for the Wingers was Cecil Belisle, who finished in first place with a score of 4-under-par 67. Following closely behind were Luke Knudsen with 74 to tie for fourth place, Michael Stoffel with 78 to tie for ninth place and Mac DeSutter with 80 to tie for 13th place.

Lake City had more golfers in the top-10 but none with quite as good a score as Red Wing. Leading the way for the Tigers was Thomas Huettl with 73 — good enough to tie for second. Behind Huettl were Riley Fritz in seventh (76), Levi Herbst in eighth (77) and Parker Schurhammer with 78 to tie for ninth.

Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa came up 17 strokes short of advancing as a team, but it did qualify three golfers individually. Anthony Cylkowski led the way with 81 to tie for 16th place. Corbin Avery tied for 18th with 82 and Jacob Smith tied for 25th place with 88.

Cannon Falls also had three golfers advance to Day 2. Addison Bahr headlined the group as he tied for 13th place with 80. Isaac Illa tied for 30th with 89 and Aaron Lawless tied for 32nd with 91.

The Section 1AA boys' golf tournament will resume action on Monday.
