Area Girls' Basketball: Z-M, Cannon Falls, Goodhue dominate defensively

The Goodhue girls’ basketball team stayed hot in its conference-opener with a 52-42 win over Kasson-Mantorville.

The Wildcats led 30-13 at the half after playing well-rounded basketball.

“(We) played about the best first half of basketball we’ve seen,” said Goodhue head coach Josh Wieme, “defensively, offensively, sharing the ball, everybody was scoring. We caused a lot of steals and havoc in our press defensively.”

Lexie Lodermeier recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats.

“Probably her best game overall,” Wieme said. “She was just a force for the whole game. She really led us.”

Kate Opsahl tied Lodermeier for the team-lead in points with 15. Joslyn Carlson had nine points and eight rebounds, while Torrie Rehder led the team with 13 rebounds.

Goodhue improved to 4-1 overall and next plays Kenyon-Wanamingo on Tuesday.

It was a record setting day for Ava Wallerich and the Lake City girls’ basketball team. Wallerich knocked down a single-game school-record with eight 3-pointers in the Tigers’ 74-40 win over Pine Island Thursday night.

The Zumbrota-Mazeppa girls' basketball team flexed its muscles in a win over St. Charles, 80-57, on Tuesday.

"The girls made the right plays on offense and we boxed out so well on defense," Z-M head coach Andy Breming said. "All-in-all, it was a great game for us."

Ali Hunstad led the Cougars with 23 points, while Makayla Arendt added 20 points. Megan Johnson scored 15 points, all coming from beyond the arc.

Randolph 68, Cleveland 57

Down by nine points at halftime, Randolph came back to win 68-57 over Cleveland on Tuesday.

The Rockets trailed 33-24 at the half, but outscored Cleveland 44-24 in the second half for the comeback win.

Andrea Splichal led Randolph with 20 points. Morgyn Otte tallied 15 points and six rebounds, while Megan Erickson had 14 points and six rebounds. Mackenna Otte added 14 points for the Rockets.

Cannon Falls 58, Schaeffer Academy 28

Cannon Falls defeated Schaeffer Academy convincingly, 58-28, on Tuesday.

The Bombers led at halftime 27-19 and allowed just nine points on defense in the second half.

"We came out very strong and continued to play very confidently throughout the entire game," Cannon Falls head coach Samantha McCamy said.

Belle Freeberg led the Bombers with 13 points and Makayla Bowen added 12 points. Bowen also grabbed six rebounds, tied for the team-lead in rebounds with Camryn Schroeder.

Goodhue 64, Caledonia 56

Goodhue took down Caledonia 64-56 in non-conference action on Tuesday.

Goodhue took played two equally strong halves and led by as much as 20 points but allowed Caledonia to cut into the lead with a lot free throws in the latter half of the game.

Arianna Thomforde had 20 points and six steals for the Wildcats, while Lexie Lodermeier recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
