Boys’ Basketball: Simley sends Wingers into the offseason
Red Wing's season came to a close on Wednesday with a 94-71 loss to Simley in the Section 1AAA quarterfinals. The Wingers closed the season on an eight-game losing streak, and won one of their final 17 contests.
Despite the 23-point loss, sixth-seeded Red Wing played well against the third-seeded Spartans. The Wingers shot better from the field (53 percent to 49), from behind the 3-point line (44 percent to 42) and from the free-throw line (83 percent to 68). But, thanks to forcing 27 turnovers, Simley took 24 more shots, hit one more 3-pointer and had seven more attempts from the line.
Teddy Tauer paced Red Wing's offense with 21 points, leading three other scorers in double digits. Nathan Carlson had 17 points for the Wingers, with Deso Buck adding 12 and Zach Cota pitching in 10. Carlson also had eight rebounds.
Red Wing finished the season 5-22 overall. Simley (11-16) moves on to face second-seeded Northfield (19-8) in one of Saturday's semifinals. Top-seeded and second-ranked Austin (24-2) gets fifth-seeded Kasson-Mantorville (13-14) in the other semifinal. The KoMets beat fourth-seeded Winona (8-19) on Wednesday, 75-72.
