Girls' Basketball: Z-M defeats Caledonia; advances to semifinals

Overtime was needed to decide the winner when Zumbrota-Mazeppa matched up with Caledonia on Tuesday in the Section 1AA quarterfinals. The Cougars were up to the task however, earning the 66-59 victory.

Z-M played a strong first half, ensuring a seven-point lead going into halftime. The Cougars would hold onto that lead for much of the second half as well, only relinquishing it with less than two minutes to play. Z-M held fast in overtime though, outscoring Caledonia 16-4 in the extra period.

"It was an amazing game to play in, to go into OT and battle all the way to the finish was incredible," Z-M head coach Andy Bromeling said. "Every girl played a huge role in this game and I am so proud of those girls."

The Cougars had two players score over 20 points: Lyndsey Quam and Lauren Miller both finished with 21. Ali Hunstad also chipped in 13 points.

Caledonia has led by Katie Tornstrom's 23 points, with contributions by Heidi Bolduan nine, and Jenna Twite eight.

Z-M (21-6, 11-5 Hiawatha Valley League) has now won 11 of its last 12 games. They will face Stewartville in the semifinals at 5 p.m. on Saturday at Mayo Civic Center. Stewartville won their only matchup of the year by eight points, but that was on Dec. 12.

Stewartville 59, Lake City 49

Although Lake City dropped its Section 1AA quarterfinal matchup against Stewartville, 59-49, on Tuesday, the game was much closer than the score indicates.

Every time that Stewartville looked like they were going to run away with the game, Lake City would go on a run to close the gap. While Lake City never led after their early lead four minutes into the game, they would also never trail by more than 10. In fact the score was as close as 51-47 with just one minute remaining in the game. Lake City was never able to gain the lead though and with the loss, their season is now over.

Grace Bany had a double-double for Lake City, scoring 16 points and securing 11 rebounds. Mya Shones narrowly missed out on one of her own with nine points and eight rebounds. Allison Kubista scored 11 points and Morgan West also scored 10.

Stewartville was led by Lily Welch with 15 points and nine rebounds, Kailee Malone with 13 points, and Erin Lamb with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Lake City concluded their season at 12-13 (6-10 HVL).
