Area Boys Basketball Wrap: Panthers fight off surging Bombers

Cannon Falls mounted a comeback after being down 33-20, but they couldn't get over the hump against Pine Island on Friday as the Panthers held on for a 46-45 Hiawatha Valley League win.

Josh Navratil had a team-high 16 points for Pine Island, followed by 11 from Jacob Weber and nine from Dane Loucks.

Chase Reber hit four 3-pointers for a Bomber-best 16 points. Ryan Dirckx, Drew Otte and Isaac Illa each finished with eight points.

Pine Island (5-7, 4-4 HVL) begins a three-game homestand Monday against Lewiston-Altura. Cannon Falls (5-9, 2-5 HVL) will host Lake City on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Lake City 67, Goodhue 34

Lake City got at least five points from seven different players in a 67-34 victory over Goodhue on Friday.

Reid Gastner led all scorers with 15 points, and the Tigers also got a career-high 11 points from Josh Matanich.

The Wildcats had just one double-digit scorer in Mitchell Hemenway, who finished with 12 points. Mitchell Schrimpf was next for Goodhue with eight.

Lake City (12-3) has a showdown with St. Charles on Saturday, while Goodhue (9-7) hosts Bethlehem Academy on Tuesday.

Stewartville 73, K-W 54

A high-scoring first half gave Stewartville all it needed in a 73-54 victory over Kenyon-Wanamingo on Friday night.

KJ Riley had 24 points, and Carter Groski pulled down 20 rebounds for the Tigers, who led 46-33 at halftime.

Jack Buelke had 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the Knights, and Sam Ringham added 13 points in the loss.

K-W (1-16) will continue its search for a second win on Monday at LeRoy-Ostrander.


Byron 59, Z-M 40

Zumbrota-Mazeppa was limited to one double-digit scorer and 33 percent shooting in a 59-40 Hiawatha Valley League loss on Thursday.

Robvon Jackson had a team-high 12 points for the Cougars, followed by seven points and five rebounds from Zach Hutton. Jacob Niebuhr added five points, 10 rebounds and three assists in the loss.

Leading the charge for the Bears was Nick Brown with a game-high 15 points, followed by 12 from Bjorn Knutson and nine from Caleb Christenson.

Losers of three straight, Z-M (11-5, 5-4 HVL) will try to rebound on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at Pine Island.


Lake City 71, K-W 35

Lake City was nearly unstoppable out of the gate Tuesday, taking a 48-12 halftime lead en route to a 71-35 Hiawatha Valley League win over Kenyon-Wanamingo.

Four players finished with double-digit points as the Tigers hit 11 3-pointers on the night. Marc Kjos led the way with 14 points, followed by 13 from Nathan Heise, 12 from Reid Gasner and 10 from Zach Bremer.

Jack Beulke was the Knights' top scorer with 10 points.
