Boys Basketball: Strong start puts Scarlets past Wingers

Up 25-13 midway through the first half, Mankato West went into the locker room on a 18-6 run to pull ahead of Red Wing, 43-19 at halftime. Eventually, the Scarlets put the game away with a 79-48 Big Nine Conference victory on Friday.

DonTray Johnson moved from the bench to the starting lineup and finished with a Winger-best 11 points, three rebounds and three steals. Coming off the bench, Carson Nystuen also finished in double figures with 10 points along with three steals.

The Scarlets held an 8-3 advantage in 3-pointers made while shooting 51 percent from the floor. Red Wing finished the night shooting 36 percent.

The Wingers (4-8, 3-5 Big Nine) host a pair of games next week, with Rochester Mayo on Jan. 16 and Northfield on Jan. 19.
