Area Baseball: Randolph blanks Mayer Lutheran in second round

The Randolph baseball team shut out Mayer Lutheran 9-0 on Thursday after receiving a bye in the first round of the Section 4A.

The Rockets opened the scoring with two runs, both coming via a sacrifice fly, in the first inning. Brandon Gerster and Andrew Wenstrom hit back-to-back RBI-doubles in the second to give the Rockets a 4-0 lead.

Four runs was all Wenstrom needed on the mound. With little resistance, Wenstrom struck out 10 batters in a one-hit shutout on 83 pitches.

Matt Weber led the Rockets with three RBI. AJ Weidner drove in two runs and Wenstrom, Joey Erickson and Dane Ehleringer each scored twice.

Randolph next faces Heritage Christian Academy Tuesday at Murray Field.

Kenyon-Wanamingo 2, Cannon Falls 1

Deadlocked in a scoreless tie, Cannon Falls scored first on Roan Reardon’s solo home run in the fifth inning.

Kenyon-Wanamingo answered in the sixth. Garrett Grove’s double scored Tyler Ryan from first base. Two batters later Cole Flom drove in Grove from third on a suicide squeeze to the pitcher.

The Bombers began to rally in the seventh. After a ground out to start the inning, Nick Bultena singled and Ben Villarreal walked. The Bombers couldn’t push across a run as a two consecutive flyouts ended the game.

Bomber Riley Miller took the tough-luck loss on the mound, giving up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 5 ⅔ innings.

Cannon Falls, the Hiawatha Valley League Blue Division champions, ended its season 12-9 overall.

Kenyon-Wanamingo advanced to the Section 2AA second round game to be played Tuesday.

Goodhue 2, Legacy Christian Academy 1

Conor O’Reilly gave Goodhue a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI-single. The scored remained 1-0 until the sixth.

Carter Danielson reached first base on a dropped third strike. Ethan Schafer singled, then O’Reilly singled home Danielson to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.

Working with a two-run lead, Wildcat Carson Morken allowed a run in the bottom of the sixth but no more as he earned the win in a 98-pitch complete-game effort. Morken allowed two hits and three walks while striking out four batters.

On Tuesday, Goodhue advanced to the Section 4A second round matchup against Legacy via a forfeit by Chesterton Academy.

Wednesday

The Lake City baseball team scored first, but a fifth and sixth inning outburst helped La Crescent win 6-1 on Wednesday.

The Tigers scored a run in the top of the first with two outs in the inning. Josh Matanich walked. Jake Wohlers singled to right field. Hunter Grimm drove in Matanich from second with an RBI-single to right. It was all the Tigers could manage against La Crescent pitchers Bryce Weymiller and Sam Wieser.

La Crescent scored twice in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, then scored four more runs in the sixth to pad its lead.

Rochester Lourdes 13, Pine Island 0 (five innings)

Pine Island struggled against the top seeded Rochester Lourdes, losing 13-0.

The Panthers trailed 8-0 after two innings. Although the Panthers did keep the Eagles off the scoreboard in the third, the Eagles scored five runs in the fourth to go up by 13.

Michael Braaten and Johnny Bauer each collected a hit, the only two of the game for the Panthers.
