Baseball: Red Wing splits with Mankato West, Austin

Holding a slim lead, the Red Wing baseball team fell behind in the later innings. Austin forged ahead to win 7-2 over the Wingers on Thursday.

The Wingers scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Jack Carlson and Caden Benway each drove in a run. The Wingers offense couldn’t string together many hits after scoring in the third.

The Packers, with relief pitcher Andrew Schumacher shutting down the Wingers, jumped ahead 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning. The Packers added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Marcus Walm struck out three of the four batters he faced in relief for the Wingers. Bear Blaney had two hits and scored a run.

Red Wing moved to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the Big 9.


The Red Wing baseball team won a low-scoring affair, 2-1, over Mankato West on Tuesday.

Neither team could manage much offense. What offense was provided came last two innings of the game.

Winger Deso Buck drove home Marcus Walm and Jack Carlson on a single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Wingers carried a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh. The Scarlets managed to plate a run, but no more against Winger Ben Kuehni.

Kuehni finished with six strikeouts, while allowing four hits and walk in a complete-game victory.

Red Wing moved to 5-3 overall and 4-3 in the Big 9.
