Area Track: Lake City qualifies for state in six events
The Section 1A track and field championship wrapped up on Thursday in Elgin with a number of area athletes qualifying for the Class A state tournament.
Lake City led the way with state qualifiers in six events. Ashley Veronen punched her ticket to state during prelims on Tuesday with a high jump of 5 feet, 4 inches — 2 inches higher than the qualifying mark.
In the finals on Thursday, Lake City had second-place finishes in five events to advance to state, including: Lilly Meincke in the 400 with a time of 59.36 seconds, Ashley Veronen in the 300-meter hurdles (46.53), the 4x800 relay team of Liv Kozlowski, Hallie Willers, Samantha Darnell and Lilly Meincke (9:49.61), and Ethan Heitman with a high jump of 6 feet, 3 inches and a long jump of 21-01.75.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa also had a trio advance to state, including: Lana Yeakel — who beat the qualifying mark by 1 inch with a long jump of 17 feet on Tuesday — and in the finals the 4x200 relay team of Robvon Jackson, Dylan Mollenhauer, Cole Peters and Jacob Niebuhr took second with a time of 1:32.46 and Niebuhr finished first in the long jump (21-04.50).
Elsewhere, Kaly Banks of Cannon Falls advanced to the state meet with a first-place finish in the triple jump (35-05.75) and Jarod White and Will Warneke of Pine Island advanced with a second-place finishes in pole vault (12-05) and the triple jump (42-01.50), respectively.
