Amateur Baseball: Hampton trips Bears in CCVL playoffs

Cannon Falls managed to tie the game after Hampton’s big four-run second inning. But the Bears could not hold on as the Cardinals put up four more runs for an 8-5 victory Sunday.

Cannon Falls took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Hampton scored four in the bottom half to take its first lead. The Bears scored three in the third, but the Cardinals added two runs in the fifth, and two more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Alex Tauer, Taylor Pagel and Rich Burr each had two hits for Cannon Falls, and Braxton Lindow had two RBI. Carter Dombeck was hit for six runs, all earned, over five innings on eight hits and three walks in taking the loss.

Ryan Heisler earned the victory for Hampton, going six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts. David Barry and Rhett Hebig each had two hits and three RBI for the Cardinals.

Postseason underway this week

Fifth-seeded Cannon Falls begins the Region 4C playoffs at 4 p.m. on Saturday against second-seeded Wells. All games will be played in Cannon Falls, including top-seeded Hampton facing sixth-seeded Minnesota Lake at 1 p.m. Third-seeded Blue Earth and fourth-seeded Waterville will close the first round at 7 p.m.

The tournament continues on Sunday and then resumes on Saturday Aug. 13 with the championship game scheduled for noon Sunday, Aug. 4.

The Region 1B tournament began Tuesday with Red Wing, the fifth seed, heading to fourth-seeded Northfield. Game 2 is Thursday, at the Red Wing Athletic Field, while an if-necessary Game 3 would be Friday in Northfield.

Top-seeded Miesville, and second-seeded Dundas received first-round byes. Third-seeded Elko hosted sixth-seeded Hastings on Tuesday.

The second round begins Sunday with the lowest remaining seed facing Miesville, and the other team facing Dundas. Game 2 of the Miesville series is Tuesday, Aug. 9, while Game 2 of the Dundas series is Wednesday, Aug. 10. The second round concludes Friday, Aug. 12.
