Letter: Red Wing should protect the Pledge of Allegiance
To the editor:
The Pledge of Allegiance deserves our protection in Red Wing. The Human Rights Commission developed a new pledge titled the "Statement of Intent," and presently both the Pledge of Allegiance and the Statement of Intent is said at all government meetings except at the Sheldon Theater Board and Community Recreation Board, where they recite nothing.
Will Red Wing vote to remove the Pledge of Allegiance at our government meetings like St. Louis Park? No, they have another approach to remove the Pledge of Allegiance by making it optional for each commission/board to opt out of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. (Advisory Planning Commission, Airport Board. Charter Commission, Community Recreation Joint Powers Board, HRA, Harbor Commission, Heritage Preservation Commission, Human Rights Commission, Library Board, Port Authority Board, Sister Cities Commission, Sustainability Commission.)
"Liberty and justice for all" is something we want our community leaders and elected officials to strive for every day, which is why it is vital for them to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of every meeting.
We the people, need to stand up, speak up, and protect our flag, national anthem, and our pledge — and the best way to do that is to run for office!
Please email, write, and/or call your elected City Council member (https://www.red-wing.org/381/City-Council), to let them know that you want the Pledge of Allegiance said at all government meetings.
The Pledge of Allegiance needs protecting.
