Letter: Safe is knowledgeable; reappoint him and honor Allen's legacy
To the editor:
As you all know, we recently lost a good friend and strong advocate, Goodhue County Commissioner Ron Allen. He served citizens on the west side of Red Wing, including Welch Township for 14 years, with distinction. He will be greatly missed.
When Ron became too ill to attend meetings, he asked Scott Safe to be his voice on the County Board. Ron believed Scott would make wise decisions, and the County Board approved his appointment unanimously. Scott's time as interim commissioner has proven Ron correct.
With Ron's passing, a new appointment is needed to serve until a special election can be held in November or February. (RE, May 8, 2019). There will be a public hearing to make that decision at the Goodhue County Government Center at 6 p.m. May 13. Please come.
Ron Allen was a careful and conscientious public servant. His constituents deserve immediate representation until the special election is held. Choosing someone to serve in Ron's place would be a truly difficult decision without his guidance. Scott Safe was Ron Allen's choice.
Interim Commissioner Safe is a local native with county government experience. He has acquired a vast amount of knowledge and expertise in a very short time, demonstrating a real commitment to serving the people.
Out of profound respect for Ron's devoted service to the citizens of Goodhue County, I plan to honor his memory by supporting Scott Safe.
Paul Drotos represents Goodhue County Commissioner District 5.
