Letter: Red Wing needs better transportation to Twin Cities
To the editor:
I wish there was a transit service to the Cities from Red Wing in the morning and evening.
Recently, I had to go to the Cities to write an exam and my friend was out of town to give me a ride, which forced me to book a ticket using Amtrak. The train was scheduled for 8:49 p.m. When I reached the station at 9 p.m. I saw other people waiting for the train. One of them called Amtrak: Delayed until 2:30 a.m. as the train had some malfunctioning — which was acceptable because things happen.
But on the other side I was struggling to decide if I have to sit at the station and revise my notes or to book a Lyft and spend $80 for a one-way trip? I had no other option since I had an exam at 7:30 a.m. If given a chance, I would prefer a public transportation service.
My drive back home is another story- I had to take a bus from the Mall Of America transit to Union Station. Again, the train was delayed by six hours. That wasn't the only time I wished Red Wing had some public transportation so that people like us who must visit the Cities for some reason can go in the morning and come back in the evening or the other way around. If that service existed, I would have saved almost a day and had a peaceful trip.
Even if the train was on time I must travel the day and stay there for a night and come back in the morning.
If there was a bus, I would have had a smooth ride in the morning and come back to my beautiful town in the evening. And also not have to change buses.
I hope the government takes this into consideration because not everyone has enough to spend even half the amount on private services and also students who might have to go to the Cities for any crash courses.
