Lyle G. Mehrkens

Lyle George Mehrkens, 80, of Red Wing, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 21, 2018. He was born November 7, 1937, in Featherstone Township, to George and Frances (Strom) Mehrkens and graduated from Red Wing Central High with the class of 1956. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture, graduating in 1958. On May 29, 1959, he was united in marriage to Karen Erickson. After college he began his career as a farmer, spending many years farming with his father and then later with his son. He also served in the MN National Guard for nine years and had been a part of Goodhue County Farm Bureau and the International Flying Farmers. From 1978-1992 he became involved in state politics, serving in the MN House of Representatives for four years and the MN State Senate for 10 years. He then worked for the MN Department of Transportation in the Aeronautics Department and he was also a realtor for Lawrence Realty. Lyle was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and ushered; was a member of the Golden K's and the Red Wing Elks BPOE #845. Together, Lyle and Karen enjoyed many summers boating on the river with their family and friends.

He is survived by two children, Todd (Dianne) Mehrkens of Hager City, Wisc. and Leah (Marvin) Grobove of Cushing, Wisc.; three grandchildren, Abby Grobove and Katrina and Matthew Mehrkens and one brother, Dale (Mary Alice) Mehrkens of Red Wing. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Karen on December 31, 2016.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2018, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend Cindy Fisher Broin officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, January 25, at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
