Girls Hockey: Red Wing blasts Mankato East
Red Wing closed out the regular season on Thursday with an 8-1 victory over Big Nine Conference foe Mankato East.
Taylor Heise had a first-period hat trick, and Elle Bryant and Sophie Schafer also scored to give the Wingers a 5-0 lead into the first intermission. Eliza DiNatale had the only goal of the second, and Heise and Nicole Oberding scored early in the third before Sydney Kanstrup got the Cougars on the board.
Heise finished with six points, and Bryant had four. DiNatale and Oberding each had two points. Tyler McGrath faced just 14 shots, and had 13 saves in the win. Haley Stockman let in eight goals, but also made 52 saves. Red Wing had 28 of its 60 shots on goal in the first period alone.
The fourth-ranked Wingers (21-4) begin the postseason on Wednesday, though in the six-team Section 1A tournament, the top two seeds are given byes into the semifinals. It is likely Red Wing will be one of those teams. The semifinals are Saturday, Feb. 10 at the high seeds, and the championship is Thursday, Feb. 15 at Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna.
