Richard W. Bennett

Richard W. Bennett, 82, of Venice, FL passed away Sunday January 7, 2018. He was born July 22, 1935 in Red Wing, Minn. to Walter and Lucille (nee Bystrom) Bennett. Richard graduated in 1953 from Ellsworth, Wisc. High School and received a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin, two Masters Degrees from University of Montana and University of Minnesota. He started his teaching career in Uppsala, Minn. moving on to the Department of Defense schools in Korea and Germany. Then he returned to Red Wing and worked in their school system. He married Nancy Collins in 1973 and together they served in the Peace Corps in Jamaica from 1985 to 1987. In 1989 they moved to Florida returning to Minnesota every summer. Richard enjoyed entertaining, cruising, traveling to all fifty states and 70 countries and stamp collecting. He is greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Nancy Collins Bennett; brother-in-law, Harley Roen; sister -in-law, Mary Ann Collins; nieces and nephews, Rodney (Carol) Schmidt, Lisa (Scott) Beach, Laurie (Eric) Hildebrandt, Duane (Maureen) Roen, Terry (Mary) Roen, Ronald (Mary) Roen, Linda (John) Dinkle, Nancy (Tod) Frederichs, Michael Bennett, and Tami Fury. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lavaughn (Robert) Gotzman, Doris Roen, LeRoy (Elaine) Bennett and Donald (Becky) Bennett. Celebration of life will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at First Presbyterian Church of Red Wing, 503 6th St. W., Red Wing, MN 55066. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Richard to the charity of your choice or the First Presbyterian Church of Red Wing.
