Text-to-911 now available in Minnesota
Minnesotans now have the ability to text 911, rather than call, in case of an emergency. Text-to-911 benefits people who are deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing or unable to make a voice call due to safety concerns. This service is available throughout all of Minnesota's 87 counties.
The Federal Communications Commission still advises that anyone who is able to make a voice call to 911 should do so, but this is a big win for disability advocates in Minnesota who wanted the service rolled out statewide, versus piecemeal by city or county, as has been the case in other states.
