Gymnastics: Pine Island wins Byron invite, Wingers third

Byron hosted a six-team invitational on Saturday, and with a score of 141.85, Pine Island won the meet. Byron came in second with a 133.5, while Red Wing placed third with a 124.95.

The Panthers had a solid opening meet, with Sawyer Gorman winning the all-around with a 35.7. Brynn Olson (9.45) and Gorman (9.35) took the top two spots on the vault, while Jaci Newman (9.35) and Kenzie Cordes (9.25) did the same on the balance beam. Gorman's 8.55 won the parallel uneven bars, with Cordes coming in second with an 8.45. On the floor exercise, Gorman (9.6), Olson (9.3), Newman (9.25) and Brynn Burkhalter (9.2) placed first through fourth.

The Wingers were led by Breck Bergin, who took third on the bars with an 8.25. Bergin tied with teammate Carolyn Hanson on the vault, with both posting a sixth-place score of 8.6. Hanson was also sixth in the all-around with a 34.1, and Hanson was sixth on the beam with an 8.35.

“I am very pleased with the efforts of the girls in their opening meet with many new skills being thrown after hard work in the offseason,” said Red Wing head coach Lisa Hanson. “It’s exciting to see them performing so well right out of the shoot. With more work and polishing, we will see some pretty awesome things.”
