Getting down to business: Port Authority, Small Business Development Center host free workshops
Five free business workshops will be offered to the public starting July 11.
Red Wing Port Authority and Small Business Development Center will present a series of workshops during the second Tuesday of the month in July through November.
Mark Thein, who works with the SBDC, appeared before the Port Authority Board in June to talk about the services SBDC offers to entrepreneurs such as help developing a business plan. The organization also works to provide "those start-up steps that entrepreneurs might not always know about."
The services provided by the SBDC are free.
In an interview with the Republican Eagle, Thein explained that every entrepreneur and situation is unique, so the SBDC tailors its approach based on the individual or business.
The upcoming workshops will be more of a "universal lesson," or "a primer of what an entrepreneur has to think about," according to Thein.
Dan Rogness, Red Wing's community development director, explained that the city annually provides financial support to the SBDC.
"We thought rather than just have the one-on-one, maybe we would try more of a classroom setting approach," explained Rogness.
The five workshops are meant to cover topics that local community members and entrepreneurs will find useful. Topics will be:
• July: Entrepreneurial essentials
• August: Financing your business
• September: Marketing your business
• October: Business plan development
• November: Business legal structure
Shari Chorney, the business development manager of the Port Authority, was an advocate for the SBDC. She told her fellow board members during their June 4 meeting: "I know for sure that Winona and the Port Authority here in Red Wing have done a lot of joint funding in the past because we are both big believers on the value that the SBDC brings to us."
Registration is now open for the seminars. To register, contact Chornery at 651-385-3639 or email@example.com.
