Goodhue County voters have chosen their new sheriff.

Marty Kelly received 12,275 votes — or just over 55 percent — to comfortably defeat challenger Paul Gielau's 9,821 votes, according to unofficial numbers early Wednesday on the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

Kelly will replace Kris Johnson, who has been filling in since the retirement of Scott McNurlin in August.

There were 41 write-in votes.
