City Council candidate forum set for July 24

A Red Wing City Council candidate forum will take place Tuesday, July 24, at the American Legion Post 54. The evening will begin with a meet-and-greet session at 7 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer forum at 7:30 p.m.

All candidates have been invited to address questions from Red Wing residents and business owners. Prepared questions will be used if original questions are exhausted. Submitted questions are expected to be brief and to the point. Statements or opinions will not be permitted.

The event is hosted by the Hiawatha Valley Toastmasters.

Diercks to seek re-election

Red Wing School Board Chair Arlen Diercks announced at the July 16 School Board meeting that he will seek re-election in the upcoming November election.

Diercks has served on the board since 2015 and was named chair this year.

Residents interested in filing for the Red Wing School District have from July 31 to Aug. 14 to do so.

Body part found in Mississippi River

A human leg was found by a resident on the Mississippi River in West Newton on July 14, according to a news release from the Wabasha County Sheriff's Office.

The resident was cleaning out a debris pile 20 feet from the shore, when the person spotted a shoe and a human leg, femur down to foot, in the pile of debris.

There were no other human remains located at that time.

The incident is under investigation and more information will follow pending a report from the Medical Examiner's office.

Semi crash causes Prescott power outage

A semi crashed into a power pole at the intersection of Highway 35 and Highway 10 in Prescott around 11 a.m. on Monday. Xcel Energy reported that over 600 people lost power. The crash left Highway 10 traffic closed for more than two hours, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Motorcyclist injured in Pierce County crash

A Twin Cities man was airlifted Sunday after a Pierce County motorcycle crash.

Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies responded at 3:56 p.m. July 8 to 385th and 380th streets in the town of Maiden Rock for a single-motorcycle crash. The rider, identified as 55-year-old Hilltop, Minn., resident Michael Marnich, was southbound on 385th Street when he veered into the west ditch, re-entered the roadway and overturned.

He was flown by Mayo One helicopter to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where a spokeswoman said he was in good condition Tuesday.

Plum City/Maiden Rock EMS, Lund Fire and Maiden Rock Fire assisted deputies at the crash, which deputies said remains under investigation.
