Shannon Draper, Red Wing’s new fire chief, introduced himself to City Council Monday after his first day serving in the position. Draper replaces Tom Schneider, who retired in April.

“It’s an honor and privilege to be chosen as the fire chief for the Red Wing Fire Department,” Chief Draper said at Monday’s meeting. “It’s a department that’s rich in history and professionalism since 1857. As your new fire chief, I can tell you that the traditions and best practices of the department will continue as we move collectively and constructively toward the future.”

Draper’s firefighting and emergency management servies career spans 25 years, having served as chief fire officer for the U.S. Department of Defense in Kosovo, Bosnia and Hungary. He accepted the position in Red Wing after serving as the fire chief in Vermillion, S.D., since 2012.

“My direction is clear and resolute: to serve this community and the members of this department to the best of my ability,” he told the council. “Thank you very much for this opportunity.”
