UPDATED 3:02 p.m. Monday, May 20, 2019
Red Wing Fire Department responded to an activated fire alarm at Ferrin's Furniture, 301 Main St. at 9:57 a.m. on Monday, May 20.
When firefighters reached the scene, they “found smoke in the rear of the store,” acting Fire Chief Mike Warner said. “The call was upgraded to a structure fire response."
The store was open for business at the time of the fire and was evacuated. Utilities were shut off, and firefighters located the fire in the basement.
“The fire was under control within 20 minutes after arrival,” Warner reported. “The fire was contained to the area of origin.”
The fire caused some structural damage in the basement and smoke damage throughout the building, according to Warner. Although other buildings nearby were evacuated, no damage was reported outside of Ferrins Furniture.
No injuries were reported on the scene.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“I am very proud of all of our members, as well as our neighboring communities,” Warner said. “We worked together like a well-oiled machine.”
Responding to the scene were fire departments from Red Wing, Ellsworth, Lake City, Miesville and Goodhue with a total of 40 firefighters. The Minnesota Department of Transportation assisted with a partial road closure of Highway 61 and Xcel Energy assisted on the scene. Goodhue County Dispatch was involved throughout the incident.
