Moped driver causes police chase, crashes into squad car

CANNON FALLS — A driver of a moped was taken to a hospital on May 24 after crashing into a police car, then losing control and falling onto the roadway.

The Cannon Falls Police Department said an officer attempted to stop the moped driver on the 700 block of Cannon River Avenue after founding the driver, whose name has not been released, did not have a driver's license or moped operator permit.

The driver fled from the officer, going onto the Cannon Falls Bike trail. The driver drove off the trail into the woods near the dead end of Hardwood Way.

Assisting officers set up a perimeter to locate the moped seem driving east on Highway 19. Officer followed the driver, attempted to move ahead and block the moped from continuing.

In the process, a collision occurred, causing the moped driver to lose control. Officers requested paramedics immediately.

At the time of the accident, the driver was alert and responsive. The driver was taken by the Cannon Falls Ambulance.

According to the Cannon Falls Police Department news release, the driver is in stable condition.
