St. Paul man found in Cannon River

A St. Paul man drowned on May 28 in the Cannon River near Welch. Witnesses saw him fishing from shore and falling into the river.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers began searching the water with an airboat and a flat-bottom boat equipped sonar, according to Sheriff's Office.

After more than an hour, canoers who were in the area came across a body in the water and notified authorities; 40-year-old Mor Gelay was recovered shortly thereafter.

The Goodhue County Sheriff's Water Patrol and Dive Team, Minnesota State Patrol and Red Wing Ambulance responded to the scene as well.
