Red Wing man arrested safely after authorities cordon off Jefferson neighborhood
On Dec. 15, 2017, at approximately 9 p.m., Red Wing Police Department responded to a reported disturbance in the 700 Block of Jefferson Street. Upon arrival officers observe a male and female fighting in a front porch.
Seeing police, the male suspect fled into the house, officers said. The female stated that there was a gun in the residence.
Officers established a perimeter around the house and called for the assistance of the Goodhue County Emergency Response and the Crisis Negotiations teams. Once the Emergency Response Team and negotiators arrived they entered the residence, communications were established with the man, who retreated to the basement.
The unidentified suspect claimed that he wanted to end it all and negotiators maintained communications with him for approximately two hours, and it was determined that the suspect would not come out of the basement. Officers located three handguns with ammunition on the first floor. Using numerous less lethal options, they eventually apprehended the man.
He was transported to Mayo Clinic Health Systems for treatment and then turned over to the Goodhue County Adult Detention Center, pending potential charges for obstructing legal process, domestic assault, fifth-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
The streets were cordoned off. Using an automated telephone system, authorities alerted neighborhood residents to stay indoors. The same system, people were informed at approximately 1:45 a.m. that the incident had been resolved.
Red Wing Police Department was assisted by the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Response Team, Goodhue County Crisis Negotiations Team and the Red Wing Fire Department Ambulance.
